Hello designers, friends, creatives and general admission.
A few weeks ago fellow DOT, Jane Leonard from Savvy Graphics, and I visited a very special paper coating company. "Paper coating?" I hear General Admission scoff from the back row. Why should you care if the paper was coated or not? Oh, you don't want to smell that new perfume inside the special folded page in your magazine? No? You don't want to tilt and pitch that awesome holographic DVD cover? And you didn't want to scratch that scratchie at all, did you?
Now you care.
Unfortunately, from a designer's point of view, aside from using spot UV, the use of laminates and special printing effects are given little thought. And clients may not ask about them at all. But there's a whole world of creative options out there, and THAT is where All Kotes smashes it out of the ball park. All Kotes is one of the few companies in Sydney that provides tantilisingly tactile finishes to paper stocks. Whether it is coloured, tinted or scented coatings, coloured films, textured finishes, special barrier coatings or holographic films. Or simply the silver surface that you scratch off to reveal that you missed out on the $500,000 by one tiny damn four-leaf clover.
On arrival at All Kotes HQ, Business Development Manager Darren Delaney showed us the amazing products that the company has had the honour of producing. We learned how scratch-and-sniffs work, how you can potentially have any smell contained in those crafty little areas. What if you were advertising lamb? You could scratch or rub the surface of your advertisement and have the aromatic smells of fresh rosemary and juicy lamb-tastic wonderfulness wafting up from the page!
Their laminates, coatings and foilings are truely incredible.
TouchMatte is wonderfully smooth and soft coating texture. It feels slightly waxy under your fingers, a little velvety, almost adding a slight resistance to your touch. Upon letting my brother (my descriptive-word mastermind) touch it, he said "it's like I can almost run my fingers through it instead of over it." How do I put that into one descriptive word?! But well done, kid. Well done.
BrushKote is a beautiful metallic-like silver lamination. It looks like brushed stainless steel, and although I was concerned about it feeling like plastic, I was assured that all of All Kotes products are 100% recyclable! Faith restored!
MicroMotion (MicroKote) was what I found to be one of the most intriguing. It creates a fantastic 3D effect. All Kotes says "It has to be seen to be believed and it is most difficult to describe the varying and ultimate effects of MicroMotion on your printed sheet." (Reference: All Kotes e-newsletter from 12/04/2011). They definitely got that right. I can't describe it. I can't even get my go-to wordsmith to describe it sensibly without just saying "oh yeaaahhh that's sick!" ... The coating that is applied onto the paper is actually a 3D pattern. It gives the design dimension and allows direction to be applied, literally. MicroMotion comes in varying patterns, which reflect the light in opposite or opposing directions creating an astonishing visual effect.
FaceKote was also one with incredible potential. Once applied to a stock, you add water to the printed area, which then turns into facepaint! Super cool! Another fave was the glow-in-the-dark coating, GlowKote, and the heat producing coatings, ThermoKote, which is simply when you apply heat to change the colours and reveal what was under a blank section of colour.
One of the most exciting parts of our trip was being able to see a foil printing job in progress.
What I also found extremely interesting during our tour, was foiling and metallic paper coats and how they can be printing directly on top of, i.e. they can be overprinted. To give you a specific example, Justus Magazine recently worked directly with All Kotes in producing their most recent issue, issue 03. Justus is an industry-only professional publication that has worked to unify designers and craftsmen of the print industry. Together with All Kotes, Justus created one of the most visually intriguing covers I have ever seen. In a fabulous collaboration, All Kotes used one of their beautiful Fancy Film coatings on the top of a black stock. This resulted in what was originally a blue tinted pearlescent coating when printed on white, turning into an amazing greeny black dark and moody pearlescent coating. This was then simply overprinted. Check it out here under the "Sneak Peak" tab. And then buy it. Because it is AMAZING, and to explain to you why would just need so many descriptive words from my wordsmith!!!
Hopefully by now General Admission have stopped their scoffing :)
If you would like to contact Darren at All Kotes, don't hesitate to give him a bell on 0418-445-718 or send the company an email firstname.lastname@example.org.
To wrap up, I'll leave you with a few snaps...
